Spring Sports Preview
by Sammy Benbow
It’s that time of the year again. As the calendar hits March, the winter sports come to an end with glory or defeat, and the spring sports have started up again. Now, it just feels different. The weather is warmer, the sunshine is brighter, and the sports are here. This year, there’s a lot to look forward to for spring sports, with multiple teams having the ability to bring home a CIF banner.
We’ll start with Boys Baseball, where the team has started the season 6-0, and just brought home the Bully’s West Tournament Championship, and are starting another tournament this week, the Lions Tournament. Last season, the team fell short of expectations, and they are hoping to rebound this year, which will hopefully end in a CIF Title.
As for Boys Tennis, they have also started off hot, as they look to avenge their loss in the CIF Title match to Torrey Pines. This year, the players are optimistic that they can go all the way, especially after beating Coronado, another Open Division team.
You also can’t have spring sports without track. Year after year, track and field has been the biggest count of any sport, and this year is no different. Although the track team is off to a slow start, many athletes are setting new school records. Most notably is Bianca Becker, who vaulted an 11’7”, a new CCA Record, placing her 3rd in San Diego. Also, Kelly Bernd committed to UCLA, where she will run the distance for the Bruins.
In other news, Softball is back at CCA! After a break last season, the Softball Program is back up and running, with a new coach, a new facility, and a new team attitude. The team has started the season with wins over San Ysidro by a score of 22-2, and Calvin Christian Academy, by a score of 7-5. This year, the Ravens Softball Program looks good, as they look to start a winning tradition for CCA.
As we wrap up the Spring Sports summaries, we take a look at the Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams, both of whom are looking strong this season. As for the Boys, they recently beat Sage Creek this past week, moving their record to 2-2. The team is much older and more experienced this year, as they have a number of players returning on varsity this season. Even though they had a down year last year, expect Boys Lacrosse to have a good season this year.
Meanwhile, for the Girls, they just recently beat the state champions from Utah, Park City, by a score of 11-5. The Girls have started the season 5-0, and it doesn’t look like they’re slowing down. This year, I think that both the Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams have a chance to make a deep run in the CIF Playoffs.
Finally, we wrap up the Spring Sports preview with a look into Boys Volleyball. The Boys are 6-4 to start the season, including a quality 2-1 win over Rancho Bernardo. The Boys started the season a little slow, but they have just recently hit their stride, as they hope to carry that momentum into the later months of the season. Well, that’s it for the Spring Sports Preview, make sure you get out to one of these sports to support your Ravens!
